Documents and visas are valid until June 30, 2025. Documents expired from February 22, 2020 remain valid and are accepted in Portugal for all legal purposes. Learn more.

To apply for renewal you must have a valid residence permit or one that has ben expired less than 6 months ago

A residence permit is a document issued by the Agência para a Integração, Migrações e Asilo (AIMA), which allows foreign citizens to reside in Portugal.

The residence permit can be temporary or permanent and must be renewed periodically.

You can renew your residence permit in person at a registry office, by prior appointment. The services will contact you to make an appointment.

Who can apply

You can only apply to renew your residence permit if you are:

a foreign citizen, or their legal representative, with a valid residence permit or one expired for less than 6 months ago.

How to renew

You can renew your residence permit in person at a registry office, by prior appointment. The services will contact you to make an appointment.

On scheduled day, bring the documents you need to apply for the renewal

In general you have to submit the following documents:

valid residence permit or one that has been expired for less than 6 months
valid passport or travel document
proof of means of subsistence
proof of accommodation (e.g. a proof issued by the Parish Council or lease contract and last rent receipt, or the property’s sale contract or registry)
proof of regularised tax situation, where applicable
proof of regularised situation in social security, where applicable
authorisation to consult criminal record (except if you are under 16).

It may be necessary to provide further evidence, in addition to the general documents, if the renewal of the permit is for specific purposes, such as:

employed workers
teaching activity
high qualifyed activity
cutural activity
education
research
trainee
volunteering
among others.

In Registry Offices t is not possible to request:

an initial residence permit application
the renewal of the residence card for a European Union citizen
the renewal of a residence permit for investment activities (e.g., Golden Visa)
the renewal of a residence permit for victims of human trafficking
the renewal of a CPLP residence permit
the renewal of long-term resident status
a duplicate residence permit (due to loss, theft, damage, or updates to marital status or address).

In Registry services, you can request the renewal of temporary and permanent residence permits

Renewal of temporary residence permits:

for exercising a professional activity
for exercising a teaching activity
for engaging in a cultural activity
for higher education students
for secondary education students or students in a qualification level 4 or 5 course of the NQF, or a training course
for scientific research
for researchers in mobility
EU Blue Card
family reunification.
